Dear Dorothy,(Tepfer/Shubart)Nice to hear from you. Hope you are enjoying your home in New Mexico.
I am sending you a copy of a Civil War record of John Phillips. I did not research this. The daughter-in-law of my sister, Eva, is interested in the family tree and came up with the enclosed war record.
My mother's record of John Phillips (Irish) shows he was born 4/24/1828 and died 2/3/1886. (58 years). His wife, Julia Hoffman, (Penn,Dutch) born Aug 18, 1849 and died Feb. 2, 1928. John Phillips is buried in an old cemetery in a rural area south of Tilden, Nebraska. (maybe a mile or two south and then east between Tilden & Meadow Grove) He has a faded and weather worn upright Civil War white marble marker over his grave. John Phillips died in a blizzard in the rural homestead S.E. of Tilden. Went out to check on the animals and was unable to find his way back to the house and thus perished.
You will note that John Phillips was born in Ohio. I have no knowledge of his parents not the parents of Julia Hoffman.
To them was born 8 children. My mother, Lucy, was the youngest in the family. She was born on the homestead in Tilden, Nebraska August 12, 1885. That means she was less than 6 months old when John Phillips died.
I do not know the birthplace of the other children not their ages. The children's married names were; Louisa Harned of Norfolk, NE., Lydia ?? of Oklohoma City, Minerva Ayers of Ft Collins, CO, Mary hartman of Norfolk, NE, later moved to Indiana, Lucy Richardson of Tilden, NE, Sarah Yeoman of Tilden, Jack Phillips (barber) of Tilden, William Phillips (carpenter) of Tilden.
The Richardson family of Tilden was Eva, Keith, Ralph and Harry. Two of us survive, Eva 84 and Ralph 74. My family is Kevin, Occupational Therapist supervisor and Sandra, Attorney. Eva's family is William,
Jr., a chief aeronautical engineer with Lockhead. Eva has a great grandchild.Sarah and Zura Yeoman were married 7/26/07 (no children). Sarah had three sons from her first marriage which were: Roy Cue, Guy Cue and Burt Cue. Zura Yeoman was brick & cement mason.
Sarah was a homemaker. She was a happy person, friendly and giving. She enjoyed her bulldog, Jiggs. She did sewing, gardening, raising chickens, has rural but yet a small town urban experience. (no indoor plumbing) it was a big occasion for her to travel to Norfolk, Nebraska (25 miles, dirt roads) in their car (Overland-Whippet) to see sister, Louisa & Mary. This was a treat for my mother, too.
Sarah passed away sitting in her rocking chair with no apparent warning.
Hope this finds you in good health and with everything going well.
Sincerely,
Ralph Richardson
